I love New
Zealand fashion brands that completely embody all things feminine and gorgeous,
that’s why I was thrilled to discover Make Hearts Race, a fresh new label that after launching last year, has just produced it's first collection ‘One Fine
Day’. The collection is designed and made in New Zealand and supports locally
based businesses, principles that I admire in a brand.
Designer
Abby Holland is only 23, yet she has already established a clear aesthetic, her
designs are effortlessly cool, playful and modern; this talented up-and-comer
is definitely one to watch.
Trelise Cooper (owner of CO-OP) has identified Abby as one of New Zealand’s top emerging designers and from November 20th Make Hearts Race will be the first brand to join the Coop label in the CO-OP Takapuna boutique. You can also purchase Make Hearts Race HERE
I was lucky
enough to touch base with Abby to ask her a few questions…..
Tell me a
little about yourself and the ‘Make Hearts Race’ brand, how did it all begin?
My whole
life I have been surrounded by fashion, with my Mother designing for over 40
years and teaching me how to make clothing from a very young age, it was a
given that I would be involved with fashion one way or another. After studying
design for two years, I started making garments for friends before I began
selling my designs on trademe. Due to an overwhelming response, I decided to
take the leap and create my own label and online store Make hearts race.
What was the
first article of clothing you ever designed?
When I was
younger, my Sister and I would always play around in my Mothers studio. We
would design and sew clothing for our dolls and each other. My first attempt
was at 5 years of age where I made a pair of shorts for my Sister. They had no
shaping or darts what so ever but luckily she was small enough to slip into
them.
What are
some of your favourite fashion websites, blogs, magazines, or books?
Not a day
goes by without checking in to "They all hate us" or " How two
live", but I am forever scanning the Internet and finding new blogs. I
love a good read of Vogue or Remix Magazine too.
If you could
meet one person (dead or alive) who would it be and why?
Is it
cheating if I say 'Holly Golightly' from Breakfast at Tiffany's? She was such a
quirky character and I would love to raid her wardrobe! It would also be
amazing to have met Princess Diana.
Who is one
of your favourite local models to work with?
Bella Smith
at Clyne. We have worked with Bella each and every season and not only is she
gorgeous, but she really does bring our clothes to life. A day on set with
Bella always makes for a fun day. We have worked with the same team since our
very first shoot. Paige Best Hair and Make-up and Adam Abernethy and Jennifer
Parker for photography. We all work so well together and always have a good
time. We really are the dream team.
What advice
do you have for aspiring fashion designers?
Never turn
down an opportunity, any advice or experience you can gain in this industry is
like gold. There are so many aspects to Fashion and there is so much to learn.
Work hard, and don't be affraid to put yourself out there.
And finally
describe Make Hearts Race in three words:
Playful,
Fresh, Exclusive
Emma
