TRISH PENG - A DAY IN NEW YORK

Last night I attended Trish Peng's debut show 'A Day In New York' which was held at Giltrap Prestige Porsche Auckland. I have been following Trish's work ever since she appeared in the Westpac Young Designer Awards (where she made it into the top three) and I have always admired her design aesthetic. The label is feminine and elegant and evokes a sense of luxury through her choice of high-end fabrics and tailored designs.

I was impressed by Trish's collection which included signature pleating details, gorgeous draping and beautiful neck lines. The collection consists of daywear, cocktail dresses and a stunning selection of evening gowns which can be made-to-measure to fit the customer perfectly. Trish has launched a 'made to measure kit', a new initiative which enables you to purchase a kit that includes all the equipment needed to find your measurements at home, an easy way to order a made-to-measure gown without leaving the couch!

I caught up with Trish to ask her a few questions about her label....

Tell us about the Trish Peng label, how did it all begin?
Ever since I was a little girl I knew I wanted to be a designer. I started my label in 2012 whilst I was in my last year at Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design. I moved to LA and NY for the past year to learn about the market over there and now I’m back working full time on my label.

You have just spent a year in New York - how have your travels inspired your recent work?
This new collection is based on my experience in New York! Each dress has a story behind it and is named after a place over there. It is such an inspiring city to live in from the people you meet, architecture and fashion.

Are you still focusing on custom made evening wear and bridal gowns or have you made a shift to producing seasonal collections?
Bit of both! This new collection consists of 21 dresses from daywear, cocktail, evening, fine evening and bridal. Daywear is ready to wear available in a size break of 6 to 12. Cocktail onwards is all made to measure.

What is your most favourite piece you have ever designed?
I’d have to say the Orchid Dress. This dress made it into the top 3 for the Westpac Young Designer Comp which led me to show it at NZ Fashion week. The ruffles were very popular last year and inspired a full collection of dresses in ruffles (Pictured below)

How would you define your personal style?
Is it reflected in the brand and the pieces you create? - My style is simple, clean, chic, I like mixing bright prints / colours with plain tones. I love dresses so I guess it has influenced my full collection of only dresses.

What are some of your fave fashion websites, blogs or magazines?
I love Gary Pepper girl as I feel we have the same taste for fashion. For NZ I love Four Eyes as they take photos of real people in everyday life. I read Remix, Fashion Quarterly and Vogue.

What advice do you have for aspiring fashion designers?
I would say find a great team of people around you, support is crucial in this industry. Also be willing to put in the hours!

In five years I would like to be.......
Based in LA and NY with a flagship store including a full Ready to wear, Evening and Bridal range.

And finally describe the brand in three words:

Feminine, elegant, luxurious
